"We are what we
repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
"A man of character in peace is a man of
courage in war. Character is a habit. The daily choice of right and
wrong. It is a moral quality which grows to maturity in peace and is
not suddenly developed in war."
- General Sir James Glover
"The world can only be grasped by action, not by comtemplation...the
hand is the cutting edge of the mind."
"Opportunity is missed by most people
because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
" Destiny is not a
matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be
waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."
- William Jennings Bryan
"And
we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least
once. And we should call every truth false which was not accompanied by
at least one laugh. "

The All Or Nothing Principle
As we begin a new year many of us eagerly write down goals for the
upcoming months. We think about all the good things we wish to
accomplish, the weight we'd like to lose, the sites we'd like to see,
and the extra money we'd like to accumulate.
That's great if you set
goals!
Goals (I call them intended results) keep us on track, keep us focused
and can even help to motivate us.
But how many people actually stick to their goals, despite their good
intentions?
The hardest part for me is not keeping the overall goals in mind but
rather keeping on track with the steps involved in actually
accomplishing the goals.
Here's what I mean...
Let's say you want to write your first eBook. But every time you
get ready to start, you put if off because you just don't have the
time. Sound familiar?
You may be suffering from
the "All or Nothing" paradox.
In her guidebook called "Access Your Abundance! A Revolutionary
Approach for Eliminating Scarcity In Your Life," Teresa Romain
explains it this way:
""All or Nothing" thinking
is another version of the "Not Enough" scarcity pattern – anything less
than all is "not enough" so what happens is that we
do nothing. And then, if we ever get around to
doing it all, we do nothing else and fall behind in all other areas of
life."
Sticking with our eBook example, one of the best ways to write the book
is chapter by chapter. Or paragraph by paragraph.
And it does not have to involve a big project, either. For
example, writing an email to your subscribers. Many of us delay
writing the email because we think we can't form all the words to
complete it in its entirely. Break out of this thinking by simply
writing the subject line, and then stop. Return to the email a
few hours later, or even the next day.
Another key point Teresa makes is that when we "do it all" at once, we
don't do anything else and we lose balance in our life. Using our
eBook example, let's assume you work on your book non-stop for 36
hours. You may complete the book (your goal), but at the
exclusion and expense of your family, your health, etc. Get the
point?
Teresa
goes on to say:
"Something is also powerful because, when it comes to
abundance, consistency is more important than quantity."
A good method of looking at your goals, and to incorporate the
"something" principle, is to outline the steps involved in completing
them. In essence, each step or task becomes a "something."
The sum of all your action steps leads to the completion of your goal,
done in a very consistent fashion.
It's also important to celebrate your "something" action steps.
For example, have a cup of your favorite tea after finishing the four
paragraphs of your new eBook. Celebrating keeps us motivated to
continue with our action steps.
Finally, by just doing something, we will oftentimes experience
increased energy and fulfillment.
As you establish your 2008 goals and objectives, ensure you clearly
outline the action steps required to complete them. Keep in mind
the "all or nothing" paradox and follow the principle of "something" to
accomplish great things in 200 and beyond!
Be the best!
