Don't Let The Fear of Failure, The
Quest For Secrets and The Desire To Belong Become Your Guiding Star
I'm constantly amazed by the email-writing techniques used by big-named
gurus in the affiliate marketing industry.
Take for example the many emails I received yesterday regarding "The
Day Job Killer." (By the way, aren't these the same guys and gals
who promoted "The Death of Internet Marketing" just a few short months
ago? Hmmm...) Anyway...
I received one email from Scott Boulch. Scott's a good guy, made
his fame and fortune in the PPC (Pay-Per-Click) advertising and CPA
(Cost Per Action; i.e., get paid for leads not necessarily sales)
arenas.
Here's his second paragraph:
"He has developed a Million dollar a year income in an amazingly short
amount of time, with his simple, direct, easy to implement methods,
using only affiliate products."
Hey, sounds good. Skeptical, but O/K. Further down he
writes...
"It requires no website, no hosting account, no domains, no experience
and it can be up and putting money in your pocket this afternoon!"
Stop!
Stop right there. How many times have you heard that line
before? I don't believe his contention for one second, but I
continue reading...
"I first thought the Day Job Killer would be a $500 or more product,
not so, it's not even a $100 product, well.... that is for today and
maybe for just the next few hours....Chris is releasing a very limited
quantity of copies of The Day Job Killer at $77.00, but only for the
next few hours."
Ah, yes, sadly I could see it coming. Scott utilizes a common
ploy to get us to buy RIGHT NOW, don't lose out, hurry! Scott
ends with...
"After today there will be two groups of people that sell affiliate
products online.....The group that "Gets It" and dominates affiliate
marketing, and the rest, who wonder why their profits plummeted and how
new internet marketers have stolen their profitable niches right out
from under their nose, overnight!"
Scott is introducing fear into the equation, and making us feel just a
bit uneasy. He's implying if you do not buy this book, you'll be
in the second group and poor, penniless and out on the street begging
for your next meal! Please, I may look stupid but I'm not dumb
(really).
Another email comes from Allan Gardyne. I very much respect Allan
and certainly curious of his review on this book.
Early on he writes:
"The book is all about using AdWords to promote affiliate products in
all sorts of brilliant and sneaky ways. He shows you tricks and
shortcuts to maximize your revenue - and how to lure clicks away from
your competitors' ads.
Be warned. The book is brutal. Chris himself happily says that is
contains "ruthless, underground, and downright evil techniques."
These paragraphs make me uncomfortable – tricks, shortcuts, sneaky,
underground and evil are not words used in my business plan. But
I continue to read...
"Here's an indication of how nasty this book is...
I received an early draft of the book last week. I was so annoyed
by one of the techniques Chris describes that I told him I thought it
recommended deceptive advertising which would be illegal where I live -
and where he lives too.
He didn't reply so I don't know if this technique will be in the final
version. Let's hope not."
Stop. Deceptive advertising, illegal? Even if they are not
those things, is that how you want to run your affiliate marketing
business? Not me, that's for sure!
Here's another interesting tidbit:
"One of the techniques described is the Holy Grail of affiliate
marketing - using AdWords to send visitors directly to the merchant -
no website needed. Chris has put a new twist on the 2004 GoogleCash
method to make it work again, potentially with millions of affiliate
products."
For those of us who use Google AdWords, we know that Google severely
frowns upon and penalizes us for sending traffic directly to an
affiliate web site. Any technique designed to "beat Google" will,
in my opinion, eventually fail. Allan agrees with me because he
says...
"Experiment with this direct linking technique if you like, but to me
it doesn't make sense to try to build your business around it. If
you do, you're building the merchant's business instead of your
own. I strongly recommend you concentrate on some of the other
techniques which build YOUR business."
Well, Amen! Thank you, Allan.
If Allan finishes his email at this point, then I walk away feeling
pretty good for reading his review. But he ends his email this
way:
"If you're even a tiny bit interested in using pay-per-click
advertising to generate affiliate commissions, you need this book. If
you're already using PPC advertising, you need this book to protect
yourself from your new crafty competitors."
Do you see what is happening here? Like Scott, Allan is
introducing fear into the equation. But consider this point:
If I spend all my time and money buying stuff to learn how NOT to do
things, then when do I find time (and money) learning how to do those
activities that fit my business?
And knowing about your competition is important, that is true, but
wouldn't you rather be a leader, not a follower?
This book or course may very well contain some elements useful in
affiliate marketing. You may gleam some ideas you can then
incorporate into your own advertising strategies. But remember
this – our "fear of failure," our quest to know "the secrets" and our
overpowering desire "to belong with the right group" should never
overpower our ability to use common sense and reason when evaluating a
new book, course or even a new business direction.
Recommendation – find your own little niche, learn as much as you can
about it, apply what you learn, build your own web site, brand yourself
and your business (not someone else's), commit to excellent customer
service to create loyal customers, then just do it! Forgot about
all the other crap pushed down our throats every couple of months
spewing about the greatest "how-to-affiliate-marketing" techniques!
Be the best!
