The Role of the
Affiliate Marketer
The other day, while searching for some advice on short vs. long copy
emails, I turned to the teachings of my mentor Jim Straw.
I picked up his eBook course "How You Really Can...Make
Your Internet Fortune As An Affiliate Marketer: Without "Selling"
Anything" and as I'm flipping through it I start to re-read almost
the entire book. Don't you think it amazing when you come across
a book so valuable that every time you pick it up, you just can't seem
to put it down?
I bet I've read this book over 50 times in the last several years and
each time I do I learn (or re-learn) something new.
You know, I bought this course over three years ago, yet what Jim
teaches remains timeless (and priceless). The book is not fancy
and it contains no graphics. Just word for word of pure gold.
Anyhow, let's review the "Role of The Affiliate" thorough the eyes of
the master, Jim Straw. Here are five quotes from his eBook:
1) As an "affiliate," all you do is direct potential customers to
the "sales page" for the product being sold...or, put out the "sales
piece" as an ad to your email list.
Of course, Jim gives advice on how to do that. As he points out
there exists many ways of directing traffic to the "sales page."
One of the most effective methods is to create a splash web page
whereby a potential customer must complete a form giving you their name
and email address, which then becomes transferred into your
autoresponder. Your autoresponder then send them an automatic and
immediate email giving them the link to the "sales page."
2) You DO NOT have to be known...the person or company actually
selling the product has to be known.
This can present a stumbling block for the new affiliate
marketer. They incorrectly assume you must first establish a
presence on the web before anyone will take you seriously. Not
true. Yes, establishing your identify remains important because
it establishes trust and credibility, but it is not critical at the
beginning. Remember, build your email list properly, and
only market legitimate products and services to your subscribers
starting on day one.
3) As an "affiliate," you are NOT a sales person. You only
introduce potential buyers to the people who have something to
sell...One of the biggest...if not THE BIGGEST...mistakes made by
beginning affiliate marketers is that of trying to "sell" the products
being offered.
I agree with Jim, this is a biggie!
Picture this - you find a great product, just perfect for your
subscribers. So...you jump onto your keyboard and type madly
away, listing all the wonderful benefits one will get by using this
product. Then you send out your five page email and wait for,
with great anticipation, the hundreds of sales to flow your way.
But guess what, no sales. Why? Because you forgot your role
in the entire process...
The only objective for your
email is to get your subscribers to "click
through" to the sales page - that's it. Don't get me wrong, you
still need to acquire the skills of writing effective email (and
website) copy. But your email's purpose exists not to sell, but
rather to entice your reader to take the next step and visit the main
sales page - where the "selling" really takes place.
4) Affiliate marketing is a business...Before you do anything
else, repeat aloud to yourself (at least 3 times)..."I am IN the
Affiliate Marketing business."
Don't fall for the instant wealth promises. Commit to building a
long-term, weather-any-type-of-storm business you can become proud
of. Only market exceptional products and services. But
above all, understand this is a business, not just a hobby.
5) The one and only thing you MUST have to succeed as an
Affiliate Marketer is a good email list...So...Before you do anything
else...even before you sign up for your first affiliate marketing
program, you Must develop your method of keeping and maintaining your
email list - If you don't do that, you are doomed to failure before you
start.
What more can I say? Without a good email list, you're
done. You need to master this skill and develop your own
techniques and methods for collecting names and email addresses.
Over half of Jim's course focuses on this very subject.
Let me leave you with one last quote from Jim. In his Epilogue he
writes...
"The ONLY thing you "must" do to be successful is to excerpt, adopt and
adapt...until you find something that works for you. It only
takes one good campaign. Once you have something that works, just
keep on doing it, over & over & over. The more you do
just ONE thing that makes you money, the more money you make.
Unfortunately, most beginners don't really fail, they just quit before
they succeed. They try a little of this, a little of that;
actually making a few bucks, but, because it isn't the big bucks they
were expecting, they quit.
Don't Quit..."
