Uncommon Behavior

Success remains an elusive target for most people, but especially so for Internet marketers.  Extensive competition, the vast breadth of the marketplace and huge learning curves just to keep up with the latest trends can make even the most seasoned veteran cringe.  Yet through all of our trials and challenges, a few simple success traits do exist for us to follow.

Victor D'Argent gives us a very concise definition of success.  We’ll take a look at each success trait he identifies and analyze them to gain some insights into our own unique circumstances.

"For financial success, you will find, is a by-product of uncommon behavior, which entails the virtues of leadership that include – as I have said – the courage to face the unknown and risk failure or misunderstanding, the humility to praise others and blame yourself (rather than the opposite), and the curiosity to broaden your mind and experience."

- Victor D'Argent,
An Uncommon Way To Wealth

1)  Courage to face the unknown

This can represent a stumbling block for a person new to Internet marketing.  Taking a deep breath and telling yourself you're fine isn't always enough.  Here are several suggestions to help you find the courage to forge ahead:
  • Prepare a comprehensive business plan before starting any new business or venture.  Knowing the direction of your business, and it's purpose, will provide you the courage to remain on course.
  • Establish a back-up plan.  If something goes terribly wrong, a fall back position exits to help you carry on.
  • Educate yourself thoroughly before starting anything.  In-depth knowledge of your field of business will give you the confidence and the courage to keep going in rough times.

2)  Risk failure or misunderstanding

To a risk-averse person, the lack of this success trait – being able to handle failure and rejection – can stop you dead in your tracks.  Overcome these fears by observing the following:
  • Understand you will make mistakes.  No one is perfect or right all the time.
  • Recognize we learn the most from our mistakes and failures, not from our successes.
  • Make sure you establish clear objectives, goals and deadlines.  This point refers to the above suggestion of having a comprehensive business plan.
  • Don't take it personally.  If you deal with the public – customers, suppliers, prospects, affiliates - in your business, then you will receive criticism.  It comes with the territory.  Deal with it quickly, don't dwell on it, just move on.
  • Ensure your loved ones – spouse, friends, etc. – know the nature of your business.  This will help avoid any misunderstandings when working at midnight on a Saturday night.

3)  Humility to praise others and blame yourself

Do you possess a big ego?  Just love to brag to others about your successes?  Tend to blame others for mistakes?  If you do, your business (and relationships) may suffer and you may not even know it.  Consider these ideas:
  • Adopt an "I take full responsibility for my own actions" attitude.  Admit your mistakes, correct them quickly, learn from them, and then move on.
  • Stop or slow down and acknowledge the effort of others.  Publicly praising others for a job well done leads to increased motivation on their part.
  • Remain humble and calm and don't brag.  Things important to you may not be important to others.

4)  Curiosity to broaden your mind and experience

This critical success trait often separates the winners from the losers.  As human beings we like routines.  We get up at the same time every morning, we brush our teeth in a certain fashion, and we get set in our ways about the foods we eat.  For most people, we find change difficult.  But to survive in the Online world, we must constantly adapt.  We must harness the drive to remain hungry and curious.  Here's a few ideas on how to do that:
  • Commit to continuous education.  Put in your business plan and your budget the requirement to read books, take courses, listen to tapes, and attend seminars on a regular basis.
  • Always keep an open mind.  Sometimes we don't possess all the answers.
  • Develop a positive mental attitude.
  • Embrace change as a positive development.  In fact, create change yourself.  Experiment, test and revise regularly.
  • Create fun and excitement in your life.  Remember to take time off from your business.  Develop a good balance between work and home life.

By studying success traits identified by people like Victor D'Argent, we too can develop our own Uncommon Behavior and become a winner in all of our endeavors!

Be the best!
