Killer Strategies To Identify &
Evaluate Top Affiliate Opportunities
In a conversation with my AzoogleAds
rep the other day we discussed the need to possess a strategy or
"checklist" of how to
evaluate affiliate opportunities. So...
...I thought it might be fun (and, hey, even educational!) to review
some key questions we should ask ourselves each time we perform an
affiliate opportunity evaluation:
1)
Is the company reputable?
How long have they been in business? How good is their customer
service? (The last thing you want is to recommend a product or
service, only to find out later the company treats their customers very
poorly or even worse, ignores their support requests.)
2)
Can you provide an honest opinion or recommendation of the product or
service?
Key point – don’t believe the myth that you must personally try/buy/use
every product or service you promote – that’s a bunch of bull! In
the SWAT Traffic Captain’s conference room a few weeks ago a fellow
made this point – "Do you think the owner of Home Depot has used every
product he or she sells? If so, they must have a pretty big
garage!"
But...having said that, you don’t want to promote garbage,
either. In my own case, I oftentimes rely on the opinions of
others. For example, if Jim Straw recommends a product, then I’m
pretty sure the product is good and a market exists for its use.
Which leads me to my next point...
3)
Is there a market for the product or service?
You really need to do some digging here – don’t fake this step.
Failing to determine if a market exists has cost many affiliate
marketers a lot of time and money.
Look for products with at least a 1% conversion rate (that is to say -
for every 100 people you send to the affiliate web site, one sale is
generated). Also review the selling price – is it too high?
Too low? Be sure and review the free bonuses being offered with
the product or service. Are they relevant and valuable?
4)
Does the affiliate program pay a good commission rate?
You should expect to be paid 20% to 50% of the net profit for every
product or service you sell. Don't waste your time on programs that
offer less than this percentage. Remember – your time is
valuable, and resources are scarce (at least for most of us!).
5)
Does the affiliate web site contain effective sales copy and is
professional-looking?
Our job as affiliates is to drive targeted traffic to the affiliate web
site. It is NOT our
job to sell the product or service. So...if the web site sucks,
then guess what, you will not achieve the minimum 1% conversion (sales)
rate discussed above. We don’t need to be expert copywriters in
order to evaluate the site, but the site should be very professional,
easy to read, and contain a clear call to action.
6)
Are commissions paid on all types of sales?
What I mean is this: if the affiliate company sells a book
online, or over the telephone, or via the fax machine, or accepts
mail-in orders, do you make a commission no matter how the sale is
made? Oftentimes the affiliate only gets credit for online
sales. Make sure you check this out beforehand. Failure to
do so could mean leaving a lot of money on the table.
7)
Does the company provide excellent support for its affiliates?
Does the company offer promotional material such as banners,
pre-written ads and emails, web site copy, advertising suggestions,
etc.? Additionally, are statistics provided?
Such stats should include:
- How many visitors have clicked through from your site
to the affiliate site?
- How many of those visitors made a purchase
- Sales totals for that month (and previous months)
- The number of sub-affiliates under you (if you belong
to a "two-tiered" affiliate program)
Using the information above will enable you to effectively identify and
evaluate top affiliate opportunities. Do your homework first,
then promote!
Be the best (and thanks for being a subscriber)!
