It's Not Sexy, But It
Could Save Your Business
As
stated in the last Bulletin, making money by placing Google AdSense ads
on your web pages is all the rage. Tons of new AdSense-related
products flood the market these days, all claiming to help us get rich
overnight. Hey, maybe some of them can, I don't know.
But what I do know is a lot of marketers will fling everything else
aside and jump on this new AdSense bandwagon with reckless abandonment.
You know, I've seen it before, and it's happening now. You can
just feel it in the air; it's like spring…
But before you make that leap, ask yourself this very important
question…
"Does this new revenue source – AdSense income – help me to diversify
my business?"
Ah…diversification – it's not a sexy concept, but without it your
online efforts may be in peril.
Remember a few months back when the HIYP companies/industry went
bust? Thousands of people lost their shirts (and business)
because they placed most of their money with these companies.
They were not diversified; instead, they placed "all their eggs in one
basket."
Now I'm not suggesting that Google AdSense is going to be "here today
and gone tomorrow," that's a silly notion. But let me give you a
hypothetical example to get the ‘ole brain pan working:
You want to open a corner grocery store in your neighborhood. You
would not – I hope – just sell one kind of bread, and that's it.
No, you would offer other products your consumers demand like milk and
eggs and cheese, etc. Also, you would probably offer more than
one kind of bread.
Well, it's the same thing with an online business. You want to
earn money from several different sources, such as:
1) Selling your own product(s) or services;
2) Affiliate income (receive a commission for selling other people's
products or services);
3) Referral or recruiting income (introduce new people to a company or
system);
4) Google AdSense income;
5) Consulting income (such as copywriting or website-building)
6) Any other ways you can think of – lots of ideas exist!
In my own case, I do all of the above. Not in equal proportions,
mind you, but each contribute to the bottom line.
You see, diversification enables you to "weather the storm."
Continuing with the AdSense example, let's say you start to generate a
nice monthly income from these ads, with the majority of your site
visitors coming from the search engines.
Then one day Google and the other major engines "change the rules" and
suddenly the traffic to your site goes to almost zero. Guess what
happens to your nice monthly income?
That's right – it goes to almost zero as well.
Don't think it can't happen? Think again, it happens all the time.
In this case, you can diversity in two ways:
1) Develop several different ways to drive traffic to your site; in
other words, do not rely solely on search engine traffic;
2) Develop other revenue sources, such as income from affiliate
marketing – do not make Adsense income your only source of revenue.
It's common sense, right?
Now I fully realize when just starting out it is difficult to
diversify. But your game plan should incorporate becoming
diversified as quickly as possible.
And do not become afraid of generating income from off-line sources, as
well, such as direct marketing or consulting, or whatever. If
self-employment is your goal, who cares where the money comes from.
Bottom line:
1) Do something you love and are passionate about;
2) Develop a strong business plan, incorporating realistic targets and
goals;
3) Make continuous education and personal improvement priorities;
4) Diversify your business to minimize your exposure to any one revenue
source.
Diversification – it's not sexy, but it could save your business!
Be the best!
