Traffic Exchange Advertising – Course
203: Measuring Your Results
Traffic exchange advertising works for me. How do I know?
Because I track my results. Plain and simple. But how do
you track, what should you track, and what do you advertise to achieve
maximum financial results?
Here's what I recommend…
Tools
You need tracking software. I use HitsConnect and it is
top-notch. I've tried others but HitsConnect offers many more
features than most tracking software on the market. (By the way,
I use this software for all my marketing campaigns – traffic exchanges,
Pay-Per-Click advertising, ezine campaigns, banner ads, text links in
web pages, etc.)
Splash
Pages
If the page you advertise in traffic exchange is a generic affiliate
page, it is unlikely you can change your affiliate link within this
page and replace it with a tracking link. If that's the case,
you're sunk from the beginning. Yes, you may make a few sales
from this approach (advertising with an affiliate page), but what you
do not know is which exchange is generating the clicks, or how many
times it takes, on average, for your page to be viewed before someone
clicks on your link.
Therefore, you need to use splash pages. If you're like me and
build most of your own splash pages, then inserting a tracking link is
easy. If someone else builds your splash pages, ensure you give
them the tracking link to use in your pages.
What
To Track?
There is no right or wrong answer to this question. To a large
degree it is a matter of personal preference. But always keep
this in mind: traffic exchange advertising – in fact all
advertising for that matter – is about the ultimate end result:
sales, sign-ups, or whatever the end result is you're trying to
achieve. Therefore, you can get a million clicks on your tracking
link on your splash page, but if no sales result from this activity,
then stop and fix the problem.
In addition, even knowing which exchange gives you the most
clickthroughs is not really the point. This is useful information
for sure – especially when deciding which exchange to surf and/or
upgrade or buy credits - but if no sales occur, then something needs to
be fixed.
This is where split testing and multiple splash pages comes into
play. I usually use at least two or three different splash pages
for each product/service I promote. Why? Because while the
first splash page may yield little or no sales, the second one may
produce good results. The links on both splash pages, when
clicked on, go to the same affiliate page. Therefore, do not rely
on just one splash page – spend a little time, effort and money and do
what most surfers do not do – go the extra distance.
If you decide on only page, then make small changes to it and test the
effectiveness of that change. How do you know if it is
effective? Answer this question: did I get more sales or
sign-ups, yes or no?
Don't
Go Overboard With Stats
When I first started to track my results, for each splash page I
calculated the clickthrough percentage for each traffic exchange.
In other words, if I showed my splash page on TS25 1,000 times and got
15 clicks , then my clickthrough rate = 1.5%. I would do this
calculation for each exchange and then rank them. This is good
information – but – once you do this awhile you can get a sense of
which are your top exchanges (I call them the "Core Group"). Once
you reach this point, you can stop these types of calculations.
I still track clickthroughs for each splash page for each
exchange. Sometimes my results tell me to promote splash page #1
on TS25 and ILoveHits, splash page #2 and #3 on TrafficRoundUp and
SWAT, and so on. This is great information – why waste credits on
promoting splash page #3 on TS25 or splash page #1 on SWAT?
The point here is there are many things you can track. Just don't
get bogged down in a sea of stats – they can really become a monster
when you promote three different product/services using 15 – 20 traffic
exchanges! Always keep the end goal in sight.
Final
Thoughts
Here's a bonus tip for you. I'll probably get lynched in the
forums tomorrow and forevermore for making this statement, but here
goes:
From my experience, "Only home-based business/how-to-make-money
products and services (and related tools) or traffic exchange related
product or services yield sustainable financial results from traffic
exchange advertising."
I've tried diet products, music products, insurance, personal care
products, and many other "hobby-type" promotions – all, every one,
failed using traffic exchanges.
I realize, probably more than most, that an effective traffic exchange
campaign can be dependant on: quality of the splash page, traffic
exchanges used (because some are far more effective than others), time
of day the splash page was shown, number of times the splash page was
shown, and so on and so on. But here's the thing…
…I'm not basing my opinion on just a couple of campaigns over a
two-week time period. I've tested many, many products and
services over the last six years and the results don't lie. Yes,
I still continue to test them. But if you seek a good return on
your money, take heed to my assertion above.
But…please do not take my word for it. If you use traffic
exchanges, you must track your results. You need to decide for
yourself what does and does not work for you. I leave you with
this thought:
Know, don't guess.
Be the best (and thanks for being a subscriber)!
