Traffic Exchange
Advertising - Course 101
Traffic Exchange (TE) advertising can be an effective marketing
strategy, but only if you understand all issues involved.
Having "surfed" manual traffic exchanges since 2001, my experience
continues to teach me many valuable lessons. But each day while
surfing it becomes apparent to me that many fellow surfers just "do not
get it." I suspect their results are very poor (or non-existent),
and probably explains why the average surfer only lasts a few months,
gives up and then quits.
It's a shame, really, because done correctly, this free advertising
strategy can yield some significant gains. And I say that from
personal experience. So stick close…
A manual traffic exchange is designed very simply: If I view your
site, you view my site. It is not always a one-to-one
relationship – sometimes you have to view two or more sites before your
site gets shown once. But you get the idea.
That's it - nothing more and nothing less.
Oh, sure, most owners jazz things up a bit with games, fancy graphics,
extra credits for sponsoring new members, whatever. But the basic
premise remains the same – I view your site, you view my site.
Simple.
But you probably already knew that, right? So…let's look at a few
key issues that are not well understood:
It's
a Sellers' Marketplace
When you surf, your objective (in most cases) is to earn credits or
points so that your site(s) will be seen by others. So what does
that tell you about the mind-set of the other surfers? Aren't
they just like you – wanting to earn credits? Like you, they are
not buyers, they are sellers. In other words…
People do not care about
what you are promoting to them! Do not try to sell them something!
This is a significant barrier you must break through; otherwise, no one is going to click that link
on your site or sign up for your newsletter, special report or whatever.
So what's the secret? The secret is a specially-designed web
page, called
a splash page…
The
All-Important Splash Page
Never use an affiliate page as the site you promote on traffic
exchanges – you know, the URL you are given to promote when you sign up
as an affiliate. It's the sales page for the book, course, etc.
you're promoting.
Why?
Two reasons: One, a thousand other people are also promoting the
exact same page, and two, no one knows who you are. More about
branding in a minute.
Back to the splash page –
what is it?
A splash page is a fast loading web page that is designed to do several
things. I tend to follow Jon Olson's concept
formula: A.C.A. design (Attention / Curiosity / Action).
First, this page must create attention.
You do that by being different, by being funny, or sad, or…by just
being unique. That in itself will draw attention. A good
headline or header graphic works as well. (Now you know why you
should never just use the affiliate URL mentioned above.)
Second, create
curiosity. In Jon's words: "this is done by
highlighting in NO MORE than a paragraph some key problems and
solutions that your web site can offer the surfer." This is a key
point – do not write a book! People will only spend about 3 – 5
seconds looking at your page, so make it short.
Third, a
strong call to action. What do you want the viewer to
do? Click a link, fill out a form, etc. Be very specific and clear.
You must tell people exactly what to do. Remember, these people
are in a hurry, anxious to get to the next site, so make it easy, fast
and painless. Tip – make
all links open in a new window so that the viewer can continue to surf,
while the page that opens up once they click the link on your splash
page remains open for them to read.
Branding
There is a fourth concept I use, in addition to the three above:
I always include my name, email address and picture on every splash
page I promote. I want people to know who I am. It's a
matter of trust, really. Question – who are you most likely to
buy from – someone you know and trust, or a complete stranger?
Think about it.
It's
a Long-Term Strategy Baby!
Most new surfers expect results overnight. Folks, reality check
time. Like most worthwhile business activities, traffic exchange
advertising requires patience, perseverance, focus and testing.
In other words, work. Don't be fooled by the free part.
Yes, you can get your site(s) shown for free, but if you want results,
you need to work at perfecting your advertising strategy.
Test,
Test, Test
Which days of the weeks yield the best results? What time of day
should I surf? The only way to find out the answers is to perform
your own tests. What works for me, may not work for you. To
a large degree it depends on what product or service you promote, your
branding – i.e., how well people recognize your name, and how often
your
sites are shown. Most of my splash pages are shown 24x7 on about
5 different traffic exchanges, and only shown occasionally on about 15
other exchanges.
My advice: invest in a good tracking program, like Hits Connect, and seek out your own answers.
Traffic exchange advertising is a very effective marketing strategy for
me. It can be effective for you, too, by applying the concept
above, coupled with a little patience, dedication and the right tools.
Be the best!
