"We are what we

"A man of character in peace is a man of
courage in war. Character is a habit. The daily choice of right and
wrong. It is a moral quality which grows to maturity in peace and is
not suddenly developed in war."

"The world can only be grasped by action, not by comtemplation...the

10 Ideas For A Website Tune-Up
In the August 2007 issue of Website
Magazine an article called "Shortening The Distance To A Sale" gave
an excellent snapshot of analyzing and – hopefully - increasing sales
from visits to your website.
If you experience declining sales (or whatever your site is designed to
do), then the article makes the point that by looking at your web site
analytics you can oftentimes discover the reasons why.
The article also lists "10 Ways To Shorten the Distance and Increase
Conversion." Let's look at each one to better understand how we
can make possible adjustments to our websites to increase the sales
conversion rate (visitors vs. sales, sign ups, etc.):
1)
Understand and meet visitor's expectations
When advertising your site, whether through traffic exchanges, PPC or
classified ads for example, make sure your advertising clearly
communicates what your site is about. If your site is all about
dogs, don't say in your ads your site contains information about cats.
2)
Provide clear, intuitive navigation
If visitors need to search for a link to something, you've lost
them. They won't spend precious seconds doing so and they'll exit
your site with no hesitation. Clear navigation between pages and
outside links is a critical component to any site.
3)
Provide organized and useful content
We should all know by now that useful content, relevant to the topic of
your site, is important. Long gone are the days of sites which
just display a bunch of links (can you say Google ads!) and nothing
else. But how well we organize our content is also very
important. The use of boxes and tables, different colors and
varying font sizes can make it easy for visitors to view the content
online.
4)
Avoid cluttered displays
The overuse of banners and other graphics can actually distract
visitors, so use them sparingly. Remember – people go online to
gather information, not to see how pretty a site can become.
5)
Facilitate scanning
This goes back to the last two points. People like to quickly
scan information first. Make sure you don't include a thousand
flashing banners and unorganized content on your web pages. Make
it easy for visitors to quickly find the information they seek.
Once they find it, they will then stop and read in detail what you
say. But make scanning easy.
6)
Distinguish required from optional fields
When requiring your visitors to complete forms, such as an order form,
make it clear which fields are required and which are optional.
The use of an asterisk is one idea.
7)
Provide feedback on user's locations
This point refers to the navigation tools of your site. As your
visitors move between pages, make sure the visitors know how to go back
to previous pages or go to your Home page. If they can't figure
out
how to go back, they will instead exit your site.
8) Use
descriptive page headings
Match your page headings with the content on that page. By doing
so visitors can quickly glance to the top and gain an immediate
understanding of where they are. Any confusion may mean an early
exit.
9)
Provide feedback when visitors must wait
When visitors click on a link to go to either an internal web page or
to an external website, delays are inevitable. If the wait
is more than a few seconds, then providing feedback such as a countdown
timer or a progress bar can be extremely helpful. Without such
tools, a lengthy wait will cause most visitors to exit your website.
10)
Account for browser differences
Make sure all your web pages work with most browsers. I found out
first hand about this issue! Test your pages in Internet
Explorer, FireFox and as many other browsers as you can. Believe
me, they all work differently!
Using the ten suggestions above can allow us to design and maintain
user-friendly websites, optimized to meet the needs of our visitors.
