"We are what we
repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit."
"A man of character in peace is a man of
courage in war. Character is a habit. The daily choice of right and
wrong. It is a moral quality which grows to maturity in peace and is
not suddenly developed in war."
- General Sir James Glover
"The world can only be grasped by action, not by comtemplation...the
hand is the cutting edge of the mind."
"Opportunity is missed by most people
because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work."
" Destiny is not a
matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be
waited for, it is a thing to be achieved."
- William Jennings Bryan
"And
we should consider every day lost on which we have not danced at least

Darrell's 7 Web Design Tips For The
Busy Internet Marketer
I'm in the process of building a new web business with a launch date of
January, 2008. Although a programmer is building the web pages
for me based on my specifications, I'm responsible for the content and
the overall design of the site – I call it "look and feel."
As I look at the initial design and start to make improvements, I'm
reminded of a couple of things:
First, this is fun!
The journey from conception to reality is not (and has not been) easy
and without bumps in the road. But the challenges we face cause
us to be strong in our convictions, realistic about our expectations
(especially when compared to scare and limited resources like money),
and flexible in our dealings with others. O/K, it makes us humble
at times! But this is how we grow, and we should not overlook the
scenery along the way.
Second, and this is the
point of this Bulletin: what the heck is good web page design
anyway?
Know one thing first - I'm not a professional web designer or
programmer. I'm just your average Joe on the street who knows a
little HTML, can put together basic web and splash pages, upload files
to a server, and operate an autoresponder.
However, in my travels over the years I've seen a lot of websites and
I've talked to many users about web design. As I prepare for
round two of improvements to my site, I made a list of guidelines to
assist me in this process. You may find them helpful too.
1)
Content Is King
Despite rapid change in this industry, there is one constant – content
is king. People go online to find information to solve a problem
or to satisfy a need or want. In most cases they are not
interested in or seeking out the latest banner technology.
2)
Too Much Content
Although I just said content is king, understand most users will not
actually read very much content on your web pages. So don't
overwhelm them with your latest novel on your Home page. But
remember…web copy is important. Hypnotic phrases, placed in key
areas – especially in paragraphs by themselves - will involve the users
and hopefully cause them to continue to read down the page. This
brings us to the next point…
3)
Allow For Skimming
Web users like to skim pages to quickly find what they seek. So
design your pages with short paragraphs, bullet points, color and
selective underlining. This type of design will aid in skimming,
and make the users' experience more pleasant.
4)
Don't Beat Around The Bush
If content is number 1, then clarity must be number 2. Clearly
(and quickly) show what your web site offers users. Avoid jargon
and meaningless slogans – just be direct and concise. What's in
it for them? How quickly can they find the answer to that
question?
5)
Avoid The Graphics Trap
Banners and video may look great on your site, but if they detract from
your content and message, or cause your pages to load too slowly,
forget about ‘em. Also avoid graphics which do not relate at all
to the theme of your site. Placing a picture of a dog on a site
devoted exclusively to rare snakes found in a Safari desert will
confuse your readers. So…it may be the best picture of a dog
you've ever seen, but…don't do it.
6)
The Important "About Us Page"
Gaining trust with online users is not easy, but it can make the
difference between whether someone buys or not buys. Make sure an
"About Us" page exists and contains sufficient detail to offer the
users knowledge of who we are, what we represent, and what our business
is about. Contact information – especially a telephone number –
is especially important. A photo of the owner(s) is very helpful
also – it makes you human, and not just another computer entity.
7)
Smart Internal Linking
Don't place a link to your Home page on your Home page. That's just
sloppy design. Ensure all links on all your pages do not direct
back to the same page. Frustrating users is never a good thing –
so avoid this easily correctable situation.
As I step back from my designing role, I place squarely upon my head a
customer hat. And lo and behold, all those "tricks" I placed in
my web copy and those silly-ass graphics showing mid-way down the page
magically disappear. What remains is the true nature of the
site and what I offer my users, concisely presented and easy to
read. Amazing!
Be
the best!
